Dear Tami,
Phillips stove was recently test marketed in this area and people knew that
it was being offered at a concessional price of US$35. People saw that the
stove was made completely of stainless steel and that it also had a
mechanism for blowing fresh air into the flame. This, coupled with the fact
that the item was being offered by a well known multinational company, made
them realise that the real price had to be more than US$30. I mentioned in
my previous communication, that US$ 55 was roughly what one had to pay if
one wanted bottled gas. The supply of bottled LPG is not at all reliable in
the rural areas, and therefore, devices like our compact biogas system and
Phillips stove evinced great interest among the rural rich. With a one-time
capital expense, they got a cleanly burning cooking device in which they
could use fuel produced by themselves. Freedom from an external supplier of
fuel is great morale booster.
Yours A.D.Karve
