Dear Paul
It is no secret - it is convered in the original design drawings. It is
just the ability to shut off nearly all the air to the fuel.
The grate/combustion chamber I sent to Ethos some time ago (was it the first
stove camp??) had the holes in the right place for that.
Remember that I suggested that a plate (round about 155 diameter) be placed
on 3 pieces of short 25mm sq tube to lift it up. Then light a fire and get
it going well, and drop the Vesto onto the plate so that it seals the
bottom. This creates the effect that can be made with a more complex air
controller (that I can't afford to make yet). It goes from a Tsotso to a
Semi-gasifier to a gasifier with a single sliding controller.
With a small stove, you can get the primary air up to a reasonable
temperature /only/ by bringing heat down from the top (secondary combustion)
region. It might be beneficial to insulate the outside of the transport
region and make sure the charcoal-y ash is available (like under a Vesto or
at the bottom of a Rocket stove). Perhaps the gasifier will have a problem
using top lit fuel in that respect.
I think it is worth trying to get the fuel mincing problem addressed by ANY
means possible that can be accomodate within the stove because it is a heck
of a lot less work and worry to pay a little more for the stove than to
crunch fuel forever.
There is a new stove in development in Europe that uses quite small pieces
of chopped tree which will go into field testing in January (nothing to do
with me, that one) and it is on the borderline between a small wood stove
and a gasifier in terms of the work that will have to go into fuel
preparation.
I feel the larger of your gasifiers has a bigger chance of getting into the
formal sector at scale.
As far as I know I will not be going to the ETHOS conference though
obviously it would be good to get together. I would like to demonstrate the
Lion layout (I am still struggling with a name, but it really looks like a
lion!) with real bricks and let people see it in action. It is quick to
make. I will try to get a video to Tom M in MPEG format if I can only find
that CD with the editor on it....
Regards
Crispin

Crispin,
I look forward to seeing your "real" Vesto (or is it Vesto ++ ) and to
see it in
operation.
It is not an easy task to get primary air up to 200-300 C in a small stove.
Will you have it at the ETHOS meeting?
Paul
