Dear All,

We tried the center hole idea once under the hood. It was pretty low
powered. Maybe because there was less radiation to the pot? Charcoal seems
to mostly work by radiation in the Gyapa, Jiko stoves. Using a skirt around
the pot does not seem to help very much maybe because of low velocity, lower
Delta T?

Larry suggests metering the charcoal like wood pellets down a grate into a
Rocket stove. Like the center hole idea then we are trying for heat transfer
by convection, I guess?

Nordica MacCarty has done more tests of charcoal at our lab and we will be
contributing soon.

Best,

Dean

improving charcoal stoves

An important question is whether Lanny's Center Fire Charcoal burner can be
used to significantly improve the performance of existing charcoal stoves or
be adapted to large scale production and dissemination.

If you look at the (Ashden Awards Finalist) CFSP New Lao Bucket stove (
www.bioenergylists.org ) and follow the links (CFSP Stove Designs) to
compare it with the traditional Lao bucket stove on the CFSP site, it looks
like combustion was improved by using larger holes, a deeper combustion
chamber, better insulation, and a better fitting gap at the pot rests. Would
adapting a center fire grate improve performance of this stove for cooking
Cambodian foods?

Dean has probably been testing the Gyapa charcoal stove by VITA/Enterprise
Works. (See Stoves>GYAPA on www.bioenergylists.org or
http://www.enterpriseworks.org/prog_profile_energy_gh.asp ) The Gyapa is an
improved Kenya Ceramic Jiko (which in turn came from the Thai bucket stove).
Can the center fire burner concept improve the performance of the Gyapa?
Hopefully Dean has done some tests by now.

Tom Miles
