Dear Andrew
I am sorry for not responding more comprehensively to the posts of last
weekend. Time is running out.
I have to take a temperature logger to Maputo tomorrow to get a profile from
the drying room and then the continuous kiln in Boane. This will allow me
to recreate it with an electric furnace equipped with a programmable power
supply. The different kilns can then be recreated in the lab to see how the
same mix reacts to different firing regimens. That operation (making
bricks) is amazingly fast. Their turnaround time seems to be less than one
day. I worry about the rapid drying unless they do different things at
different parts of the year (wet season).
RE: Charcoal combustion - I will try to integrate the info in the post from
Nordica MacCarty and Dean on the Aprovecho charcoal stove as well as respond
to the wise words of the others.
I heard about a 'stove' in Malawi (via Cecil Cook). He says that Christoph
put a small wire basket at the top of the combustion chamber of one of
Andi's Ring Rocket stoves, and filled it with charcoal. Then he lit it
underneath using the 'Rocket Stove' fuel entrance using wood. This ignited
the charcoal above in the basket. The pot was of course right above the
charcoal.
Apparently this thing burned well and boiled water for nearly 6 hours. The
concept is interesting, though I expect the wires will not last long. I
wonder what was limiting the airflow: perhaps the fuel-pot gap or the
stove-pot gap.
Always something new to try!
Regards
Crispin
