Dear Nordica
Thanks for the comprehensive description.
I read this a couple of times and want to clarify something:
>CO and PM "to cook" is the average of cold and
>hot start mass emission added to
>simmer.
So you actually get a cold start emission and a hot start emission and
average them to yield a warm start (sort of) to rate the stove, then add the
simmer which is presumed to be identical for both starts. This is a
reasonable rating method. and perhaps we could adopt it. At least we are
aware of how you are reporting it.
I wonder what we with CO meters can do to get a meaningful comparison here,
particularly regarding CO produced during a cook. There is no way we are
going to get particulate totals in the field - not at least for some time.
The CO can be very useful to designers and we want to post meaningful
figures. Since you started reporting CO produced during a cook and the move
towards a published standard (or target) we should get some agreement on how
to get that number from a CO/CO2 meter.
As basically your computer is adding up a large number of CO and CO2
readings, I don't see a problem doing the same things with a longer
interval, say 1 or 2 minutes.
It is possible for one person to write down the CO, the fuel mass, the water
mass and temperature every 2 minutes, though it is a struggle to do it every
minute for more than 5 minutes! There is a lot of hopping around when doing
that in the field.
If I cold start and take readings every 2 minutes for the next roughly 1
hour and 15 minutes, then do a hot start with readings every 2 minutes, that
should provide information accurate enough to make a realistic comparison
with your testing, agreed?
The two starts would be averaged and the simmer CO summed to get a total
which gives a rating for the combination of the device+operator+fuel.
Best regards
Crispin
