I seem to have missed out on some of this and had a bit of trouble
following your discussion with Nordica

I've done something similar but really to see how I could use charcoal
as an oxygen "mop", to make sure no excess air was getting to where it
shouldn't .

The wires may not last long but it is unlikely the charcoal would be
the cause, more likely the heat from the wood burner as the air would
be sufficiently depleted of oxygen that the char would not contribute
as much heat as if it were in free air.
