How frustrating! I guess we need to do some education of some staffers on
the inside at the DM. Maybe we could try to invite one of them to Ethos.
Thanks for sharing,

Dear Dana,
We submitted an extremely strong DM 2006 application, we thought, with the
UNHCR as a material partner, and a proposal for stoves to be manufactured in
Ethiopia, but got eliminated in the first round.
Jim and I went to the DM Expo in Washington DC in May--and this is the event
where finalists are showcased and publicly judged to determine the handful
of winners--we found a bunch of zany, odd, quirky and whimsical projects
that frankly had no business to be considered. Often they centered on
little inventions of one sort or another that had no business leaving the
laboratory. Out of about 150 projects showcased, there were probably 10 or
15 good projects. Most of them seemed to be in the area of water quality
and supply. The stove projects were not close to the caliber we have seen
in Ethos. What stove projects we saw were coupled with other program
components, and the stoves themselves were the weakest part of the
proposals.
Best,
Harry

Hi Stovers,
Here's the press release on the winners who will share the $5 million prize:

Although energy was a topic area, there is only one project that has to do
with cooking as far as I can see. That is one in Sengal, making combustable
fuel out of invasive aquatic plants. Dean: can you find out for us the CO
emissions from water ferns?
Did anyone else apply to the DM? We were eliminated in the first round.
