[Stoves] Comparing the Charcoal Burning Rocket and Jiko Stoves

Dean,

The video and the charts are great. They raise many questions. (Bear with
me. You have to realize that you are dealing with "old and slow" here.)

1. Can you give us the CO/CO2 plots and CO2 readings for the burn so we can
understand the combustion conditions (i.e. [id est], excess air)?

2. Have you calculated the heat flux (w/m2 or w/m3) of the Charcoal Rocket
and compared it with the Jiko? Can you find the diameter of an insulated
tube that will raise the temperature enough for burnout at the same heat
rate (kW) without increasing the chemical conversion to CO(ppm CO)?

3. Do you have a larger diameter tube? What happens if you add an insulated
tube of the same diameter as the jiko to the jiko? (Use the jiko as the
grate). There must be an intermediate temperature (heat flux) where you can
get the water to boil at a low power level for the tube without creating
excessive draft and get the charcoal combustion in balance. You can measure
the CO/CO2.

4. Can you relate the heat flux (w/m2 or w/m3) of your experiment to the six
brick stove that Ken has been working with in Uganda?

5. Oh by the way, can you do the testing in India so that we can have the
results in the Aprovecho time zone by the morning?

Thanks

Tom

Comparing the Charcoal Burning Rocket and Jiko Stoves
Dean Still and Nordica MacCarty, Aprovecho Research Center, June 22nd, 2006

The charcoal Rocket Stove was compared to the Jiko-type charcoal stove sent
from Ghana. 600 grams of Kingsford charcoal was placed in the stoves under
the Aprovecho emissions hood. One test was performed on each stove for
preliminary studies. The stoves are compared in the following graph for
carbon monoxide emissions during a cooking task (to boil 5L of water and
simmer 30 minutes).
