Lanny,
I too like your low-tech grate!
You asked for thinking about it.
How about taking a metal strip, of double width and bend it within the
length to double. -Intended at least to built a V-bar-
Then bend the doubled strip in your manner round the pins.
Open (=re-bend particularly) the (doubled-) bars to a sharp V.
-Possibly it needs to make cut-ins at the return-edges of the "serpent"-
The V-profile can be filled by clay, or it gets filled with ash by use.
The V-profile is an advantage, if you want more covered surface of the grate
than only the tin-edges.
Even the V-profile gives more stability, and _possibly_ does then not need
crossing connections.
I have not yet built such a grate, but I intend to do so; even having all
the other proposals to that topic in mind.
