[Stoves] Burning charcoal

 Greetings Lanny and List.

Lanny, I generally post on the Gasification list, and only lurk on the
stoves list... BUT... I think I have an answer for you....

I am going to assume that the wire says red hot during the main portion of
the burn, and that the very top "X" section is just below the flame area you
speak of...

The wire is acting like a thermal conduit, conducting enough heat to the
critical "PAH thermal cracking area" of woodgas output, or what I'm saying
is, you have created a clean(er) burning (this is the reason for greater
flames with the wire in place) updraft gasifier.....

((PAH, poly aromatic hydrocarbons), tars, and such)

CAN I ASK this ? Did it (the test with the wire in place) have a very
distinct smell, one you have never smelt before ?

YOUR findings REALLY intrigue me...

Greg Manning,

Subject: [Stoves] Burning charcoal

I have been testing the simple two can stove
http://www.lanny.us/twocan.html, and I noticed that if I stacked charcoal
around a pipe to retain a hole in the center, that there was a small flame
above the hole. http://www.lanny.us/charf3.jpg. But when I used a steel wire
frame made from bucket handles http://www.lanny.us/charf1.jpg to maintain
approximately the same diameter hole that I got a larger, continuous flame
through out the burn. http://www.lanny.us/charf2.jpg

I wonder why.
