I would like to know the answer to this too. I think that it can only
differentiate the bad from the nearly good enough. For instance a
clean looking exhaust can still sting the eyes, which suggests high
undburnt hydrocarbons, but a fire that gives a good CO performance
(70ppm) still has an odour.

My thoughts are if you can see any smoke there will be high CO but
there can be clear exhaust and high CO from a clean burning air
starved burn, I don't think this stage can be sensed without
instruments.

So my conclusion is that if you can sense anything wrong with the fire
it's not good enough, if you cannot sense anything it can still be
dangerous.
