I thought people here might enjoy seeing some photos of a replica of a brazier found in Pompeii. Part of it holds pots in a way similar to a rocket or lorena stove. Part of works as a grill with adjustable spacing. With the rungs pushed to one side it also works as a fire pit.
If I remember correctly from the discussion at the legio site (which is down at the moment) the replica is at a different height than the original so that it can be used in places that don't allow ground fires and have a minimum that the fire needs to be raised above the ground.
Pompeii Brazier as shown here.

(but site is down today)
It's rectangular with iron rungs in a much wider spacing than a modern grill.
Here are some photos of the brazier at the Apicius yahoo group.
(This is a Roman era skills group. I believe you need to join to see the photos.)

And here are some photos of it being used for cooking

In the Pompeii brazier and cauldron photo, you can see how the rungs slide to change the spacing or in this case to use the rung side as a fire pit
I'd be interested in how you might slightly alter this stove to make it better. I think a few more sliding rungs might help to keep smaller foods from falling into the fire.
