Yes but as you point out below the heat from the cold side might be
directed back into the combustion chamber, stationary "low pressure"
gas turbines do much the same with a regenerator.

Nor are we yet, it may mean the heat exchange surfaces are too big and
difficult to link into the TEG.

Well the problems are much the same, except the car only has a few
milliseconds of retention time.
