I can see this, in fact I have seen reference to bubbling town gas
through a hydrocarbon oil of some sort to improve luminescence of an
open flame. So it really only makes a difference to a wick lamp rather
than a mantle lamp. I must admit I wasn't sure whether a "hurricane"
lamp was one or the other.
