According to what I have read on "town gas" and 
"producer gas" production, it is possible IF the 
"char" is above 800º, and generally above 
1,000º.  Gasifier technology is old, it was 
common around the turn of the century.  I put 
more credence in it than in Meyer, Dingel, et al.
