Regarding the charcoal yield as a function of charring temperature the
following.
At the Woodburning Stove Group we discussed this and it was suggested
that, if the temperature could be kept at a certain (fairly low) level
for some time, the charcoal yield could improve. The argument was that
at a lower temperature the tars would not evaporate or be dispersed but
could remain in the wood structure and decompose in situ contributing
more carbon to the char. We had no means or time or approval to test
this theory.
