I have an idea I was wondering if you could help me with.

When you say help with designing a stove on site - you have welders and 
people that know how to use them that could help me make a 'small fuel 
tester' idea that I have?
I'm not sure if this will work (and everyone will think its crazy!) but 
I would like to take the light bulb shell that is 29 cm tall and about 
4.5 cm  id and make an up-draft (and down-draft?) stove out of it that 
uses 'small fuel'. If the glass will hold up, and I think it will, we 
will be able to see the burn and see the smoke. I am thinking of a  
small metal tube that goes all the way to the bottom for primary air and 
another that just goes into the top 2 cm for secondary air. The air for 
both is independently controlled. We drop in some fire starter to the 
bottom then a grate. Light then quickly pack in the fuel to 5 cm from 
the top. Cap the top (somehow) with a flat disc with a hole in it to 
light the gas. Adjust and monitor the primary and secondary air such 
that the glow seen is optimized.

If this will work we can then use it to determine the maximum moisture, 
effects of water, carbon density of the fuel, carbon packing 
calculations, fill with water to determine void space and use Crispins 
idea to determine surface area. Test the char(fixed carbon?)  and ash 
left. Perhaps we do not need to flame the out gas but can just test for 
particulates, CO2 O2, resins etc and know what the flame would be like 
based on the results(?) Or light the flame and determine heat value(?).

The big question i have is if the glow seen is going to be too hot for 
the glass and will it soot up so much we will not be able to see the red 
color. I have had this glass dry on a red hot coil without it breaking.
Also how can we seal the top with a disc with a hole in it? and will 
this design work?

My goal is to come up with a way we can categorize small fuels  based on 
chemical and physical means. If you would like I could send you some 
glass shells to look at and work with pre conference.
