[Stoves] Charcoal Rocket Stove

Dear Dean and All:
It has been well known for > 10,000 years that charcoal is a much
cleaner fuel than raw biomass (or wood). However, the yield of energy
in making charcoal from wood is seldom more than 30%, and most charcoal
making methods create a great deal of air pollution.
Before WWII charcoal was the favored fuel for amateur makers of Producer
Gas (now better called Hydrogen Producer Gas, since the hydrogen
contributes unique combustion properties to the gas) devices for heat
and vehicle power. But because of the low efficiency of charcoal
WoodGas generators were developed early in the war to keep from using up
all the forests of Europe.
So, while charcoal is easier to use, efficiency, economy and
environmental cleanliness favor clean combustion of wood in WoodGas
stoves or other improved stoves. *Charcoal is a red herring* *fuel *in
the larger overall view of biomass fuels (unless you are using the
energy from the volatiles for other purposes).
