Dear Dean and all charcoal stovers,

You wrote:

"We will be testing more charcoal stoves soon and I'll get back to the list
with our findings. I'd be very interested in your experiences experimenting
with a Rocket type charcoal stove."

1. Inspired by your tall clay/sawdust rocket type charcoal stove, I used a
galvanized iron metal sheet formed into a 6.25" diameter 11 inches tall as
burner; got 5 liters into a rolling boil in under 23 minutes; ambient
temperature was 28C and Manila is at 69 ft above sea level where I live is
about 120 ft above sea level (guestimate). Fuel was a little under 500 grams
of lump wood charcoal. It performed like you clay/sawdust rocket with
turbulent flames above the rim for a few minutes.

2. Believing Dr. Paul Anderson, I made sure that there was a good amount of
space between pieces of charcoal by using larger pieces (about 3 to 4 cubic
inches mostly).

3. I was a bit discouraged by Dr. Tom Reed's comment about charcoal being a
"red herring" but Crispin Pemberton-Pigotts comments about charcoal
increasing availability from non-tree sources encouraged me to continue
experimenting with charcoal stoves.

4. To me the key problem is still mainly to persuade urban and rural poor
housewives to spend a bit more on a higher priced charcoal stove for
economic benefits and reduced health risks that is hard for them to imagine
or see (observe with their senses). Or alternatively, to produce a charcoal
stove that retails for US $ 1.50.

Thanks,

Cornelio
