Dear Lanny

Do not be worried by the occasional episode of smoke. It is usually caused
by accidental blocking of some hole or other by the new fuel, but usually by
being cold. The temperature of your lovely fire is disturbed by the 'cold'
you have added. Once the surface of the fuel heats up the smoke lights
again.

There is probably a trick to adding the right size of fuel and certain
quantity but I am not impressed by such parlour tricks. Clearly it is
working well and you are able to extend the burn when and if you want. You
might find that dropping in the fuel on one side all the time eliminates the
smoke or makes it worse, indicating a general distribution is the way to go.

Regards
Crispin
