I ran across a reference to a monotube heat exchanger with optional
corrugated tube. It claims that the corrugations increase efficiency by
as much as 60%. Also, not directly related, I seem to remember being
told once (It was over twelve years ago, so I shouldn't be popping
anyone's balloon. They've had ample time to do something with it)) that
corrugating the fins on heat exchanger extrusions will greatly improve
efficiency.
For you tinkers out there, it shouldn't be too difficult to attach a
spiral of wire around a pot to see if it increases performance in a pot
skirt. The pitch should probably be tight enough to make it look
"corrugated." I am sure some years could be spent determining the most
efficient pitch.
For the in-line water heater, I think that it wouldn't be impossible to
design a pulse combustion boiler that could run as a "smoke burner". I
will look around some more. There was a gentleman a few years ago that
was trying to build a "jam jar" pulse combustor that would run on wood
waste.
