I didn't realize there was a needle valve in the incoming line.  Yes, is the answer.

If you use an Israeli drip irrigation nozzle (a pressure limiting device with no moving parts) it will allow a certain forward flow (usually adjustable) but create a very high resistance to reverse flow based on sharp corners impeding the flow.  This has the effect of being a leaky non-return valve.  It might work better than a jet.
