===CleanAirSIG===
CleanAirSIG Members participated in two e-discussions held last
month
in November. The first discussion topic was initiated by Dr Karabi
Dutta from 'The Appropriate Rural Technology Institute', Pune India.
It
focused on viable interventions to reduce exposure to indoor
pollutants and provide cleaner air in informal settlements in
Kolkata, and thus improve health, particularly for women and

The second e-discussion topic was on the usefulness of health
questions in IAP questionnaires? The reliability of the interviewees
answers and the way they are influenced by the research situation
settings. This interesting discussion is still ongoing and many
members from the medical/health faculty have joined the discussion.

===CarbonSIG===
To mark the publication of Boiling Point 54 on Climate Change and
Household Energy HEDON CarbonSIG and Eco Ltd is holding a two-week
online conference Climate Change from 9-23 January 2008. Sign up

===E-MINDSET PROJECT===

A new project has been added to the HEDON Knowledge Base
The project seeks to address the structural problems in linking
energy planning and poverty reduction in the Southern Africa region.
Its specific objectives are to:
   1. develop toolkits and strengthen partners? capacity in
knowledge
transfer and linking planning and development
   2. improve communities? capacity to link energy planning and
development
   3. influence energy policy and regulatory framework to reflect
and
prioritise energy requirements for attaining MDG (Millenium
Development Goals) targets
   4. disseminate tools for linking energy and the MDGs.

===CALL FOR PAPERS FOR A 2 DAY WORKSHOP ON "ENERGY AND POVERTY: CLEAN
COOKING FUELS"===

The workshop will focus on barriers to the transition to cleaner,
more efficient fuels and technologies for meeting the cooking needs
of the poor, and measures for enhancing access, affordability and
supply. The deadline for abstracts is 28/01/08

===A NEW STANDARD ON PRESSURIZED PARAFFIN-FUELLED APPLIANCES FROM
SABS===

The SABS has just published a world class safety standard for
Pressurized paraffin-fuelled appliances known as SANS 1243:2007.
The standard is a voluntary safety standard for all paraffin stoves
and heaters that use a pressure based system of operation.

===INDIA TO ADD 1700MW OF BIOMASS CO-GENERATION BY 2012===

Under its 11th Plan period (upto 2012), the Government of India
aims to add 1,700 MW capacity through biomass and bagasse
cogeneration in many states, including Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh,
Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

The Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ)

===SOUTH AFRICA APPROVES BIOFUELS PLAN: 2% BY 2013===

South Africa has approved its long awaited biofuels plan. The
country will aim to have biofuels account for 2 percent of its
total fuel production by 2013 but will exclude the staple maize as
a source......
