A big challenge that I have seen in more than 40 years of development is the
problem of continuity in technical assistance. We install stoves in
campaigns but we often don't have adequate coverage by nutritionists and
technicians (extension agents) who can ensure that the devices are being
used efficiently or even maintained, regardless of where the stoves are
actually built. A new design places additional responsibility on the
organization that must look after them. Are agencies like USAID, GTZ-EAP,
etc. prepared to provide adequate support to maintain and improve stove use?
Or does the way that these programs are funded make it easier to start
programs than maintain them? We need to find solutions to these questions.
Locally made still has benefits. In information from Ken and Dan we've seen
some inspiring and creative uses of the of the insulating bricks that make
up the six bricks stoves for both wood and coal combustion come from the
camps themselves.
