Dear Chris,
The mantle used in our ethanol Noorie is existing Indian Petromax mantle
with slight modifications in terms of size and shape. We have found that
Indian mantles are far superior in light output as compared to Coleman
mantles of the same CP. The reason could be higher Thoria composition in
Indian mantles. We did some work almost 10 years back in development of
better mantles but did not succeed though we were able to bring down the
Thoria concentration from existing 99% to almost 40% but the ensuing mantle
was brittle. I am sure with the advent of nanotechnology and new materials
this R&D is worth exploring. Please see my article on this subject that I
wrote 3 years back. http://nariphaltan.virtualave.net/rocketscience.pdf
Cheers. Anil
