[Stoves] offtopic: Ubuntu and Old Machines

Hi:

I've been using Ubuntu for almost a year, works great, doesn't need an
antivirus... etc.

I want to quote Ken Smith:

I wish that I knew
the list was wanting old computers for people over sea. I just dumped
10 and most worked

I work for the EcoSur Network (www.ecosur.org) and from time to time we
have requests from the people we work (like small communitary
organizations, local partners, students from indigenous communities...)
wanting a computer for their work. A new computer here (assembled in
Ecuador with new parts) is about US$ 700, including a small printer.
Construction workers and farmers earn US$ 35-75 per week, so, buying a
new computer is unthinkable.
We have social and educational projects in Nicaragua, El Salvador,
Honduras, Ecuador; and Namibia in Africa. I'm sure all the projects
needs computers (I can install Ubuntu or a small Linux distro to work
with old computers) for their everyday work and for people involved.

Have you hear about Pedals for Progress? www.p4p.org - They collect
bikes and send them to developing countries... May be you can organize
something similar?

Best wishes for 2007

Paul
