[Stoves] Lowering emissions

Paul,

There probably is a reference but I'm not aware of it. It's just my
observation from watching wood burn. Some volatile matter always escapes
from the end. If the piece is short it all escapes from the end. If the
piece is longer and the cross-grain pressure is high or cracks develop,
volatile matter escapes from the middle. This is one reason that I think
fireplace burning is so different from cookstove burning. There's a big
difference in the heat transfer (in) and mass transfer (out).

The model that Mark Bryden put together for his dissertation research
might help to address this question.

cheers,
Tami
