[Stoves] [ethos] ETHOS Committee on Standards and Methods

Hello all,
I am currently writing up revisions to stove safety standards. More trials
and development in the past year added to their capability to reduce
hazards. Like all standards, these guidelines continually evolve with new
designs and concerns that become apparent over time. The documents will
provide a good venue for discussion in a new committee on standards and
methods. Support from a review committee will help further distribute these
and other standards for improving stove quality and many lives.
Cheers.
Nate

Tami,
This is a good proposal. An ETHOS committee would allow us to benefit from
the experiences, expertise and facilties of people in related activities but
not ordinarily testing cooking stoves. It could also lead to comparative
testing between/among labs. We often find greater differences between labs
using the same method than between samples. It should also help us find ways
to close the apparently large gap between what is now tested in the lab and
what you and Chris have been finding in the field.
Let's organize this first meeting for 3 pm Friday Jan 26.
Thanks,
Tom Miles

Subject: [ethos] ETHOS Committee on Standards and Methods
Dear Stovers and ETHOS gang,
I'm following up on Tom Miles's call for an ETHOS Committee on Standards and
Methods.
The purpose of this committee is not to replace the Benchmark tests which
Dean and others are working on. Many organizations develop tests which
become well accepted, and I believe it's very possible that the Aprovecho
standards could follow this path.
Instead, the purpose of this committee is to achieve international
agreement, among a broad variety of perspectives, on testing standards and
testing methods. The model I'm working from is that of the American Society
of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), which
develop testing methods through their technical committees. These committees
work to achieve agreement by convening diverse bodies of experts and
stakeholders from industry and academia.
There are formal procedures for proposing standards and receiving public
comment.
I have two proposals:
1. I propose a meeting of parties interested in either participating in or
providing input to such a committee on Friday, January 26, the day before
the ETHOS conference. The meeting would be held either in the late afternoon
(3:00) or evening, depending on the arrival times of interested
participants. The agenda of this meeting would be:
a) Reviewing the rules of other technical committees and assessing their
suitability for this purpose. (I know-- YAWN-- but this needs to be done.)
b) Identifying appropriate size and composition of this committee.
- If you can't attend such a meeting but are interested in participating,
please contact me. I will pass your information on to whoever ends up
heading the committee.
- If you are interested in attending, please also contact me, so I can try
to find an appropriate sized room.
2. I request to the ETHOS Board of Directors that a representative from the
initial committee meeting be allowed to attend the Board of Directors
meeting on Friday evening, to present an informal proposal for the first
ETHOS Technical Committee. The representative will not attend ETHOS BoD
closed business if any exists. This informal proposal will be formalized
later if the idea is accepted.
Best regards,
Tami Bond
