My Dear Friends,
I apologize for needing to tell you this news by
email, but it seems to be the most expedient way. When
someone asks "How are you?" the correct answer is "I'm
good". Well, I am good, but I am not well. I will be
fine, however (as well as good and well).
It's not easy to get into discussing one's
illness. I was tempted to not say anything. But most
of you would find out, and be alarmed. So I want to
tell you that I have just found out that I have kidney
cancer. Fortunately, it is not very advanced. It was
discovered in its early stages and it has not spread
to other parts of my body, and it will be completely
removed and I will be "cured".
While my parade has been rained on a little bit,
our work goes on. We have four staff people and four
volunteers starting off the new year in Uganda. Ronda
and Pete are joining Hugh in Gulu in a couple of days
to help with the medical project. Hugh couldn't wait.
He is already finding patients (on his bicycle) and
getting treatment for them. Martin has joined Rosette
and others in Tororo to make bricks for stoves for the
Rotary Adopt-A-Village program. Then they will begin
making bricks in Gulu to start our stove project
there. Soon, Damon will head for Gulu to make some
large institutional sized stoves for testing purposes.

So I will stay home for awhile, do some office
duty, try to write some proper emails to some of you,
go to the ETHOS conference, have my kidney removed,
recover, and be back on line.
I appreciate your good thoughts and prayers, and
I want to assure you that I am already in the best of
care. Any extra good thoughts and prayers that you may
have can be directed towards the dire circumstances in
Iraq, Uganda, Darfur, and all those other places.
I wish you all a healthy and prosperous Happy New
Year.
Much love from Ken
