It seems to be cleaner than a wick-type paraffin heater, even a good one.
The problem is lighting because in the beginning of course, everything is
cold. One might have to use alcohol or something to get it lighted fast
enough not to produce objectionable smoke. Incidentally I did not test it
with charcoal in it (as in the case when the wood is nearly burned up) so
the CO level might be higher at that time.
