[Stoves] Passive Downdraft Stoves

Without getting into the argument over whether passive downdraft wood
burning stoves are truly gasifiers or not (please), does anyone know of a
size limit for this type of stove without using a fan?  I've made a very
small, and very effective stove for personal use, and it looks like it's
burning gas.  I've looked at the paint can stove on the Bioenergylists site,
but it has a fan.  This size has some appeal to me.

Also, I'm very very new to this.  What direction does the fan blow in?  does
it or blow?
