[Stoves] Charcoal Rocket Stove, Charing in a "low-cost retort kiln"ICPS

Dear Stovers,
We now have a charcoal making stove made from a single 200 litre barrel. It
works exactly like Paul Anderson's Champion stove. In the new version, the
heat for the process is provided by partially burning the biomass to be
charred. We get per batch 2 kg or 30 to 33% recovery of char. The heat
generated by burning the volatiles can be used for cooking or for water
heating, if the stove is used in one place. But if it is taken around to
different locations in order to char the biomass available at that location,
the heat is wasted.

Chris,
...
I just concepted that 8 oils drums (à 200 litres) will fit perfectly
into the "low-cost retort kiln". (ICPS,
Improved Charcoal Production System).
The oils drums would give 3 advantages:
(It would work in a way similar to the ARTI Retorts)
[snip]

Once the material to be processed is separated from the fuel to accomplish
the charcoaling (other than the fuel contribution by the material to be
charred), one can consider a continuous process. Your description made me
think of a conveyor belt (or train) with canisters laying on it like train
cars being pulled through an oven, much like modern brick kilns.

It would seem this would have the advantage of the retained heat of the
furnace against the disadvantage of a higher capital cost. ARTI's
charcoaling solution is simple and cheap though.

I suppose another disadvantage would be the fixed nature of the system. The
ARTI system is portable.
