In my opinion, that is NOT a hybred-burner if the alcohol is simply there to
assist ignition.
Your U-channel idea does seem to be a hybred, especially if it is to do more
than just ignite the TLUD. But I think the U-channel is an unnecessary
complication. If you develop it, please let us know.

I prefer to have a fuel (like wood chips) hold the starter fluid (alcohol or
other fluid) instead of charcoal. That way there will be pyrolysis gases
available before the actual char-burning can get started. Also, it is good to
mix the "fuel-with-starter" into the top centimeter of the fuel so, as you
correctly observe, the heat actually goes up into fuel to be ignited.
