Dear Crispin,
I notice you comment about stove height and was reminded of what
middle eastern traditional ironworker's traditionally do to get an
ergonomic work height. Because the value of wood blocks is high they
don't mount their anvils on wooden stumps but stand in holes, This also
provides a handy seat ! Nowadays the holes are mostly lined with 50
gallon drums. Perhaps a taller stove could be achieved by partial
burying of the stove, that might also provide greater insulation and
remove the tippyness associated with taller stoves. A bent shovel
could be used for removing ash?. It also makes me think of the
traditional Indian metal workers furnace , a wood ash lined hole in the
ground, with a tube leading to the bottom for air blast.
All the best
Drew
