Take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_silicate for one 
view.  In the metal casting groups, sodium silicate (AKA water glass) 
changes in the presence of CO2 (and no, I don't remember the 
chemistry.  I hope these give someone a good starting place.
