It is a known and accepted fact that a cultivated plant species, that has
undergone selection and breeding for several thousands of years would always
outperform a wild species that has not undergone any plant breeding process.
But the persons in power are so gullible, that they read a popular article
somewhere, start believing in the claims made in the article, and accept it
as the government's policy.
India is unfortunately ruled by a cadre of officers called the Indian
Administrative Service. These gentlemen are administrators having no
technical knowledge. By the time they have risen up the promotions ladder to
become secretaries of ministries in New Delhi, they have become arrogant,
being convinced that they know everything and that they need not consult
experts. The ministers are of course politicians, who know only how to get
elected to the parliament. Since the science establishment owes its very
existence to funds from the Government, it is too cowed down to oppose those
in power. So, when somebody high up in the Government says that the country
should plant Jatropha curcas, there is nobody to oppose him. Representatives
of the civil society do occasionally oppose the policies of the Government,
but nobody pays any attention to them. Similar instances had occurred in the
past. A lot of time and money was wasted in India on wild exotic species
like Simmondsia chinensis, which yields a valuable liquid wax, on Parthenium
argentatum, which yields rubber, winged bean, a high protein plant,
tropical pines, etc.
Yours
