I think the point relates to the energy budget of the bacteria - if they 
are making gas and  pressurising it,  they are doing work. Do they 
produce as much gas working under pressure as they would at atmospheric 
pressure. "Common Sense" would suggest that they make less gas when 
working under pressure.
