Dear Paul,
I agree with most of your observations and suggestions and will bring them
up at the next Board meeting. I really want ETHOS to highlight issues,
discoveries, research, in field discoveries. I don't like talks that are
just covering activities without serious investigation or learnings. Let's
get to facts as much as possible. Your 3 points are well stated and I agree
with all of them. I don't think that we have a program volunteer position
but I'll investigate...
All Best,
Dean

Subject: [ethos] ETHOS program volunteer
Dear Mark and all ETHOS-Stovers,
No comment has come from the ETHOS leadership or many readers about my
suggestion for short presentations (perhaps to be called "presented
abstracts")
for the ETHOS 2008 meeting about 80 days from now.
I hereby volunteer to serve on the Program Committee.
I will be in India until almost Christmas, but will be in the USA all of
January
2008 and will be available to participate in the committee duties.
Let's all think about how we can make ETHOS 2008 an even better conference
than
the great ones of previous years.
1. More emphasis on issues, less on show-and-tell of specific projects
2. More emphasis on getting ourselves organized to get the stoves-job done,
and
less time with background info.
3. More effort on prepared substantive presentations in written/graphic
form
(about which a lively short presentation can drive home the key findings),
and
less time allocated to PowerPoints that require so many minutes to be read
to
the audience (and the PowerPoints are then also provided on the Conference
CD
-- so that people really did not need to attend the conference if they can
wait
a month or two).
4. An allocation of time (total of 2 or 3 hours?) for some pre-organized
work
sessions that will report back to the plenary group.
Discussion, please. (Brenda and John, please respond that you have
received
this message for PCIA.)
Paul
