If a cow cannot eat and digest straw, would this not suggest that the
methanogenic bacteria could not digest it either, to produce methane?

Kevin, in farming country it is not uncommon for fodder to be in short
supply some years. During these periods cattle and dairymen bale straw and inject
the bales with ammonia or nitrogen to breakdown the cellulose. Later when the
straw is fed it is digestible to ruminants.
