Kevin, you are correct that the bedding material used in poultry houses is
largely indigestible. It does provide fiber for ruminants however.

I suppose everyone is already familiar with the relationship between
nitrogen and protein. The 6% nitrogen typical in poultry litter is the same as 37%
protein as a feed ingredient.

However, we have had some significant success in using animal manures as
fuel in gasifiers. This is especially true with manures which have high ammonia
concentrations, such as poultry litter. The same ingredients which make it a
good fertilizer or feed also seem to make it a good fuel.

Neal

As I presently understand it, "poultry litter is composed of two basic
fractions:
1: Chicken feces
2: Inert biomass material, such as wood chips, shavings, straw, etc.

and that of these, the chicken feces is very digestible, but the
original inert biomass additions to the litter is still relatively
undigestible.

Would you have any information on the digestibility of the the originally
undigestible biomass fraction of the litter, after it has been used in
the litter?
