Dear Sir,
I'm a second year post graduate student at Addia Ababa University, Ethiopia.
For the partial fulfillment of Msc degree in Environmental Science, I am
planning to work my thesis on Measurements of emission from biomass burning
cooking stoves with particular focus on CO and PM.
To get some background information I visited the GTZ-SUN office , who are
working on improving efficiency of cooking stoves, here in Addis Ababa and
they gave me your address. Most of the works done here are related wtih the
heat transfer efficiency and relatively no work has been done in measuring
what comes out of stoves-combustion efficiency.
I wanted to apply the hood method of measuring emission and I tried to
browse the Internet but the way the information are given is not full or a
bit complex. The common 'injera' cooking stoves here need the construction
of a hood that fit in their size.My problem is not more of the hood. But the
instruments that are used, how they are positioned in the hood, how to
collect data, how to analise the data and other necessary details.
I believe that you very well understand the fact that for the economic
condition of this country it may be very difficult to afford for all the
sophisticated instruments that could yield the best results (as Dr. Grant
Ballard Tremeer did in Johannesburg).
I, as a beginner, want to introduce the concept so that other researchers
get some idea and be motivated to do a better study in this area and that
certain strategies could be designed to mitigate the health problems
associated with the utilization of traditional biomass (the use of which
does not seem to change in the foreseeable future).
So I am asking you if you could tell me the least possible complex method,
the leat possible number of instruments, the least possible expense and the
simplest possible way of measuring CO and PM that comes directly out of our
injera cooking stoves. I know you understand why there are many 'least
possible.." words in the sentence. I just want to take the initiative of
doing it and ofcourse produce a certain meaning full paper at the end of my
study so as to make sure that I am worth something to the community.
Please, your help means a lot to me as well as my poor country. You may also
suggest any other way of doing it that you believe is a standard and
feasible methodology.
HOPING TO HEARING FROM YOU SOON.
Yours,
Girma
Gezahegne
