[Stoves] Molasses as organic matter introduced in the soil

Dear stovers,
The discussion on application of sugar to agricultural fields started out as
an offshoot of the suggestion of applying charcoal to the fields. Let me
confess that high calorie organic matter as manure does not always work.
Several people who tried it, reported that it did not work satisfactorily.
The sugar, or any other high calorie organic matter, is applied to the soil
serves as food for the soil micro-organisms. It is effective only in the
case of well aerated soils, because the soil micro-organisms require oxygen
for their multiplication and metabolism. If the soil is water logged, or
lacks porosity due to high clay content, the micro-organisms get smothered.
Under such conditions, chemical fertilizers induce better response from
plants.
