Dear Testers and Designers
The German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) PROBEC Programme: After
extensive negotiations arising from EnerKey, PROBEC has tabled a draft
recommendation to invest in Domestic Energy Technology Testing, Exploration,
and Commercialization (DETEC) Center, to be located in the Industrial Design
Department, FADA, on the Bunting Road Campus of UJ. Subject to successful
negotiation of the detailed arrangements.
This will include a stove testing and materials laboratory. A separate,
more technical / training facility, the Stove Testing and Research Centre
(STAR Centre) will also be established immediately.
This is from the blurb on Enerkey:
"Within the University of Johannesburg, the Enerkey programme has provided
the opportunity to create alliances and stimulate research within and
between several Departments. Close cooperation between Dr Chris Cooper,
Director of the Energy Research Institute, and Harold Annegarn has led to
recruitment of several students into post-graduate energy studies, and
preparation of several successful funding proposals. Students are actively
researching topics in: vehicle operating performance and emissions
monitoring; thermal efficiency of school buildings; rural biofuels
modelling; social and environmental sustainability factors in alternate
rural biofuel strategies; solar water heating strategies; energy modelling;
thermal properties of building materials; energy efficient low cost
housing; energy use and domestic safety (safer paraffin stoves). Student
visits have taken place regionally, and between Germany and South Africa in
both directions. Departmental seminars have been presented by several
international academics, and one high profile public lecture event was
hosted by the Vice Chancellor to give a public presentation of the
University and its energy studies programme."
