Dear Pamela,

Aprovecho Research Center has written a booklet with Fiorella Cerutti from
the WFP School Feeding Programme in Rome on improved cooking stoves for
schools. Perhaps you know her and have seen the booklet? It will soon be
published by the USEPA. If Fiorella does not have a copy, I could send you
one?

Aprovecho is now working with a stove factory in China, near Shanghai, to
manufacture the school feeding institutional sized stove, which comes with a
60 liter stainless steel pot. The large chimney stove has been tested and
developed for several years. Many of the people on this list have seen the
stove operating at last year's ETHOS conference. It is very fuel efficient
while creating low levels of emissions. It has a chimney to remove smoke
from the kitchen.

This link takes you to a video about the stove. (The stove no longer uses a
steel drum as the stove body, instead it has a nice sheet metal exterior
that is well insulated to protect the cook.)

We hope to have samples ready by end of November and expect to be able to
begin shipping stoves January '08. The expected cost of the stove should be
approximately around $100 USD with pot (FOB Shanghai). Prices will be set
after the November pilot production run.

We decided to mass produce the institutional stove to be able to distribute
well-made improved cook stoves at lowest possible prices. We are also making
a household stove and a refugee stove.

This link takes you to a study of fuel use and emissions from the
institutional stove compared to the three stone fire, etc.

I am sending a description of the Chinese factory to the STOVES LIST. It
should be posted soon.

Please feel free to contact me for any further information.

Best,

Dean Still

Dear Colleagues,

My name is Pamela Shao, I have just joined the group this week and would
like to introduce myself to you all and share my project. But first a
little background information about the WFP School Feeding Programme where
my project is based.

As you may all know, the United Nations World Food Programme provides meals
at school to more that 19 million children in 71 countries worldwide. Other
than these school meals, the WFP School Feeding programme runs secondary
activities to help improve the health and nutrition of our beneficiaries
under what we call 'The Essential Package' to primary education. In this
package is the installation of fuel-efficient stoves to cook the school
meals.

Together with our various partners, we have installed hundreds of stoves in
programmes in Bhutan, Bolivia, Cambodia, The Gambia, Laos, Lesotho, Malawi
and Tanzania whose impacts have not only contributed to the conservation of
forest resources but also triggered community development; as the case in
Tanzania where women have been trained to replicate the school stove in
their homes.

I have joined this group not only to share our experiences but also
network with you all on strategies of up-scaling the use of fuel efficient
stoves in making them a basic requirement of a WFP school feeding programme
rather than stand-alone projects that we have now. I welcome your
suggestions, comments, funding sources and any other information of
on-going projects that we can learn from.

I am attaching our website below as well as the Essential Package document
for further reference.
