Andrew:

1.  One can read "CHIMNEY" in your photo 1129 - but I couldn't read the 
lines above and below.  Also the (model?) number 137.  Have you tried to 
determine its age?  Find previous users?

2.  I vote for it being an incinerator (smoke free?).  Can you try it out?

3.  Nice way to get pre-heated secondary air!
