a romour from the field - the gambia, west africa.
our project is not advanced enough to be at the promotional stage so i can't
comment on that, tom.
but with only sketchy "world" news reaching the community people are getting
quite apprehensive.
just to put things into a perspective:
the gambia i think # 154 on the UN poverty scale - out of 175 or
thereabouts.
official average income per capita per day ~ us$1
forex 1 us$ = 21 dalasi ( 37 exactly 1 year ago )

rice 1 sack 50 kg - 650 - 700 dalasi
petrol 1 gallon - dalasi 135
1 imported chicken, ca 1.2 kg - 90 dalasi
1 kg fire wood in urban areas - 2.5 dalasi (average family need 6 kg/day )
1 egg - 6 dalasi ( imported from the eu and produced with heavy subsidies,
thus being cheaper than local eggs - but often out of date after 1 month in
a container ).

one thing is for sure, it's not gonna be easy for any of us.

cheers
george
