[Stoves] Food Crisis and Improved Cook Stoves

Tom

My experience in the rural Philippines is adults starve to let their
children eat some, families will skip a meal a day, everyone is an
involuntary vegetarian, parents pull their kids out of school as they can't
afford transport or school fees. All money is reserved for eating, buying a
stove is not realistic. In urban areas things might be a little different
where the middleclass will backwards fuel switch from petroleum products to
charcoal and firewood until all the trees are gone.

Everyone should write the North Amercian and European leaders and demand an
end to the subsidization of food for fuel before we see 10's of million die.
This could be the worlds biggest famine ever. The food crisis has been
created by political morons influenced by unscrupulous corporate lobbyists.
Who in their right mind can think that fossil fuels can be replaced with
food crops as an energy source and to have major impacts on the poor. This
biofuel from food industry is still in full expansion, we haven't begun to
see high food prices. We could see emergency food aid that will cost 30-60
billion dollars per year to feed 5% of the world's population. That's not
going to happen, so starvation will happen.

Those of you who are working in the field must be seeing the impact of
increased food prices on the urban and rural poor. As they adjust to higher
food prices, or scarce supplies, has it become easier or more difficult to
promote improved stoves? How are you adjusting your promotions to the
crisis?
