[Stoves] Finned Pots

Tom,

Charlie Sellers mentions finned pots as a discussion point at ETHOS. 
The reference jogged my flypaper memory and I seem to remember, in the
deep, cluttered, recesses of my mind, some photos of old african cast
iron pots with pronounced horizontal ridges.  Does anyone else remember
such a thing?  Would they have been an artisan's stylization or were
they utilitarian?
