Dear Paul,
I am no expert as far as testing equipment is concerned. But, here is my
take on how we can test stoves.
1.) Crispin showed a combustion analyzing machine at ETHOS. A probe sucks in
hot gases, doesn't measure PM, and estimates combustion efficiency.
$1000-$3000
2.) We make a portable hood (the PEMS) that captures all the gases and
particulate matter and shows how much CO, CO2, and PM is being emitted from
the stove. Nordica just described this system. $10,000
3.) We make a little box that measures CO and PM in room air. The data is
stored and then downloaded onto a computer. Berkeley Air makes a similar
box. I am working on describing a Test Kitchen so stove emissions can be
compared using this less expensive box. Our box, called the IAP Meter, costs
$2,000.
Each system has its pluses and minuses. I'll try to publish our ideas about
a Test Kitchen soon.
All Best,
Dean
