Dear stovers
does anybody have figures on charcoal or wood fuel consumption on the
following scenario?

((Dear Liz,
thanks for your reply. Yes charcoal is questionable and of course it should
not be promoted in countries like parts of India or West Africa where
heating with fire wood is well established....
- - - however when 3,5 million tons are used in Kenya and Zambia alone,
- - - a more appropriate technology should at least be available and
discussed.))

*However also some consideration:*
A woman in Kenya wants to cook beans. She takes a handful of charcoal
(the amount which fits into the charcoal cooker, the amount which she
can by for 10 centsEuro).
She kindles the charcoal cooker and she can go away for an hour and do
other things. When coming back she adds another few pieces of charcoal.
The beans are ready after 1 1/2 hours.
*Same scenario with fire wood.*
Tell this lady to cook the beans over 1 1/2 hours by a wood fire, in
the worst (however realistic case) on a 3-stone fire.
And what will happen: The lady will (might?) use much more wood (as
needed to make the amount of charcoal used in the case before)
as she wants to keep a vivid fire going for 1 1/2 hours.....
(Will try to ask around if studies on consumption have been done for
this case?)
*best
Chris Adam*
